Handling 4th grade responsibility
Kids love ACT
Now in 4th grade some kids are losing confidence not as outgoing. Maybe fear of failure.
Suggestion - Try public speaking to encourage leader role. Activities coming up to help with that aspect (stand & deliver).
Kids now worry about how others perceive of you. ACT helps these kids shine.
Transition to 4th grade
- 4th grade more work
- Larger school
- Schoology use (can be distraction)
Time Management
- Use a timer (some kids get anxious watching a timer so use one they can’t watch)
- Self-regulation can cause anxiety. 4th grade is turning point
- Some kids worry about write ups and being better at school
Handling 4th grade responsibility
- Parents have to start stepping back which can be a relief for the parents
- Kids are handling new things with more confidence
- Bigger work load. Reading longer books can cause problems with time, they don’t want to put it down
- Kids are reading different type of books
- Teachers challenge books to encourage reading
- Some kids only like non-fiction stories
- To make sure they are getting comprehension use AR tests. There is is a list of books on AR
- The use of sign posts to go to the extra mile as far as thinking and asking questions on their own
Kids love ACT
- What are you doing to energize them
- Meet the kid right where they are
- Different speed, higher thinking
- They look for what kids love
- Doing very different activities not just piling on one
- Coach through frustration
- Take the dialogue home
- Work on affective goals
- Goal setting skills
