Thank you to Laura C for taking notes!
- Positives
- Nick’s mom: He really enjoyed this year--more confidence--loves the teacher
- Gifted kids are great thinkers but very self-critical-important to reinforce positive
- They are applying what they learn to the real world
- Etymology words
- Consumer fair
- Group setting is very beneficial. It’s done in balance with independent work. It is hard working in a group of leaders. This helps kids connect socially. This helps develop real world skills like scheduling.
- Presentation skills--great for the future and professional life--build up confidence for public speaking--kids came out of their shell--kids are being more assertive and developing motivation and problem-solving
- Kids being leaders and teaching others, including siblings
- 5th grade
- 2 ACT teachers
- They do a lot of 1-step higher--more rigor--step-up curriculum
- Theme is design--lots of creating (3D bridges)
- Scheduling
- Honors Math is a different subject and separate from ACT class
- School does a great job of scheduling
- Summer opportunities
- Some links aren’t working
- Mrs. Dooley helps lead writing workshop
- Most are very interest specific
- There is a list from Super Saturday
- Gifted teachers will post summer options on this website
- What to do if kids don’t get into Honors Math? Summer help? Confidence builder?
- Kids are not perfect at everything--take the pressure off--they all have different gifts
- Curriculum in regular math is the same just more challenging
- Mathematical and analytical skills are so important
- Prodigy Math is a good tool--feels more like a game
- To encourage reading, leave reading material handy
- Have a reading journal where parent and student both read the same book and leave notes--could use Google Doc
- Good books
- The Great Book Of Useless Information
- Who was….? (great biographies)
- What was…..?
- I survived…
- How to get kids to open up?
- How are kids in the regular classroom?
- Could be confidence or the way they process information
- Enroll them in summer program with different kids--maybe improv/acting
- Some kids are more comfortable with other gifted kids--they have a great craving for knowledge
- Start a discussion about why some things don’t interest them (for instance, if they’re always picking up a book instead of being engaged in the moment)
- Mackey Mackey -- great for circuits, great tool for self-teaching
- Consumer Fair in mid-May
